Meaning: Motivation is the willingness to perform something to achieve organizational objectives and at the same time to satisfy personal needs. Motivation will make the type of environment in which and have a prefer to work. Motivation is an internal state of our heart and mind that activates, directs, and sustains our behaviour. It is an energetic strength that drives people to behave in specific ways. In an organization individuals are motivated by different factors. Some of the individual are motivated by monetary incentives whereas some are motivated to perform a task by challenging (not-impossible) responsibility. A motivated individual works hard and has self-directed behaviours for important objectives.

In the words of DeCenzo and Robbins, "Motivation is the willingness to do something to achieve organizational objectives and at a same time to satisfy personal needs".

In the words of Dale S. Beach, "Motivation can be defined as a willingness to boost energy to achieve objective or reward".

Motivation is essential to every organization all over the world as it is the main source of employees endeavour. Level of motivation of employees ensures the materialization of personal and organizational objectives. The major importance of motivation can be described with following points:

 1. Increased productivity

Motivation enlargement the productivity of the employees. It utilizes the skills, knowledge, ability and efficiency of the employees. Once the employees are motivated, they perform the task from heart. And this ultimately helps to increase the productivity of the employees and organization as well.

 2. Develops affirmative attitude

The motivated employees always develop affirmative attitude towards the organization which leads to brings good result. Therefore, the organization must do the activities which can motivate the employees to develop affirmative attitude towards the organization. The employees who are not motivated can develop negative attitude towards the organization and they are not actively involved in realizing the organizational success. So, to develop affirmative attitude motivation is a must important.

To utilize the resources motivation is very important. The motivated employees utilizes the resources in optimum, they never let the resources go for wastage. Motivated employees always works hard for the betterment of the organizational growth and try to provide maximum satisfaction from the minimal resources.

 4. Stops absenteeism and turnover

Motivated employees are much satisfied with the organization because of this, there will be low turnover and absenteeism. They stay longer time in the organization. When organizations do not perform any activities for motivation, then there is high absenteeism and turnover. The high turnover and abstention create problems which do not help in realizing the objective of the organization.

 5. Creates willingness

Motivation creates willingness amongst the employees to perform the task or job honestly. It creates willingness by providing various financial and non-financial incentives. In the hope of achieving incentives the employees do the job or task efficiently and effectively. So, employees must be motivated to create willingness.

 7. Facilitates organizational change

Change is a must for individual and organizational development. Through motivation one can bring change in the resistivity to change the behaviour of the organizations employees which help in accepting the organizational change. Therefore, to accept the organizational change motivation is very important.
