Meaning and Objectives of Training!

Meaning: Training is a learning process by which employees learn the skill, knowledge and ability required to accomplish the particular task or job. Training reimburse skills to present or new employees to perform task. It can be defined as the process by which skill, knowledge, ability or competency required for doing particular task or job as increased it helps to understand what to do?, how to do?, where to do?, etc by employees. However different scholars have given their own views about the training.

In the words of Flippo, "Training is an act of increasing skill, knowledge and ability of employees for perform a particular job".

In the words of Decenzo and Robbins, "Training is learning experience in that it seeks a relatively durable change in and individual that will improve his/ her ability to do a job".

In short, training is a method or process by which old and existing  (new) employees are given more knowledge, skill and abilities to improve the competency and change in their behavior.

Objectives of training


Training os a learning process used for increasing skill, knowledge and ability of human resources and changing their attitude & behavior. The common objective of training can be mentioned as under with short description:

 1. To enhance competency

Competency refers to the aggregate of skill, knowledge and ability of human resources. Training is the best way to encourage with enough skill, knowledge and ability to accomplish the job or task. So the training aims to enhance or increase the skill, knowledge, ability or competency of human resources for doing a particular job.

 2. To develop positive attitude

In competency of employees will lead to the negative feelings towards the job. This means, when employees are not competent they want to develop positive attitude towards the job and organization. So the training programme aims to develop positive attitude and bring relatively permanent change in the behavior of human resources.

 3. Reduce supervisory burden

Training programme makes employees self-reliant in their job or task because they know what to do?, when to do? and how to do?. The trained or instructed employees are those who can do with limited supervision. They are enough capable to do their duties that reduce the requirement of supervision. Greater independence is only possible with sufficient training.

 4. Economic operation

Training helps employees to make better and economic use of materials and other available resources. With the support of their good behaviour damages, wastage and accidents to machines and equipment will be reduced or minimized. This helps improve productivity and quality of production.

 5. Quick learning

Training saves time during learning process. The skilled and qualified instructors will help the employees to get the skills and knowledge to do a specific task or job. This ultimately helps employees to change their behaviour cope with working conditions. Within a particular time period, an employee will be capable to do the job properly.
