In simple term, information system refers to the process of collecting, analyzing, storing, retrieving and delivering information. So, the process by which the organization collects, analyze and store the information of human resources is known as human resource information (HRIS). In other words, human resource information system can be defined as the comprehensive process of collecting, analyzing, preserving, retrieving and disseminating information about human resource of organizations.

As a system it goes through input, output, process and feedback. It can be presented in following ways:

 1. INPUT

It is the information or types of information used in human resource information system. The HRIS includes different information such as personal information, educational, skill, experience, knowledge, training, compensation related information about human resource who are currently working in the organization.

 2. PROCESS

It is a information process where information are transform into outcomes. In this process different activities such as collection, analysis, storing, retrieving, disseminating of information, etc are explained.

 3. OUTPUT

Output are the decision that happens after transformation process. The human resource information system helps to make different decision such as requirement, selection, training compensation, retention of human resources.

 4. FEEDBACK

It is the process of feeding the information back to the organization regarding the effectiveness of human resource information system. It provides information about the effectiveness of decision of the system to human resource department.
